*...
*The number of things you can do with these smartcoins is near infinite- add ideas as you come up with them...

Project management
So as not to spam the GGroup with Pucktalk, we will be using the forum to discuss the project.
This wiki will be used to maintain a "state of the plan" and provide overview.
Periodic updates will be posted to the Google Group to keep people informed, gain insight and recruit more people to join the effort.

Here's how we're talking about doing it: Ye Olde Divide And Conquer.
We'll split it all up into modular efforts.
There'll be less need to gather all interested parties on the same day and the same time.
And by working on it as modules we'll be even more likely end up with a product that has modular upgradability and hackability.

Aim is to have a working version ready by: ?Makerfaire?

The Table
Adan has agreed to lead the charge with the table/surface/plenum structure design and fabrication.
The plan is to have a holes at half inch pitch (hcp).
There are some ideas to support the surface on the plenum with a pillar array that sits between the half inch pitch of the surface.

Air Suppy/Control
Laz and Dr. Strangegun are looking for the right fan for the job.

Smartcoin Subsurface Interactive Display Elements (SSIDE?)
Issac has proposed a fastastically cool module that is extremely versatile and can lead to many different types of gameplay.
It consists of LED matrix display surrounded by an electromagnet to be added in modular fashion through the bottom of the plenum chamber.
These can show which "powerup" is currently active: display letters, points, gravity wells, deflection zone or puck mines; as well as interact with the pucks via the electromagnet (sensing and deflectign).

Pucks and Mallets
The Problem
To have the table be able to make the best possible use of the game elements one problem exists.
For the powerups to be collected, pucks need to be related to which mallet struck it last.
Currently the thought on how best to do this is have the puck know which mallet struck it last and communicate this to the powerup it hits via IR.
The communication aspect can probably be taken care of with IR communication, telling the puck who hit it seems to be the major challenge

The puck will need to contain:
#An embedded magnet
#The ability to know which mallet struck it last
#The ability to communicate to the ClusterPuck brains which mallet struck it last
#The ability to communicate to the ClusterPuck players which mallet struck it last
#The ability to charge while the puck is in the return chute

Proposed solutions
#Pucks will be 3D printed and Adan has already demonstrated that embedding a magnet can be easily achieved.
#IR LED in the puck, sensors in the SSIDE
#No freakin' Idea
#Assign players a colour and use LEDs
#Several solution possible, design will have to wait till puck design is further along but likely to be with contact rings so pucks can be stacked.

The Puck Return
The planned puck return consists of a way for the pucks to be collected to a central location under the table,
a chute to bring them to the surface, charge the electronics and then fire back onto the table in a random direction.

Da Brains
What the brain requirements are will become clearer as the project develops.

We'll throw up some not-quite-random notes that have occurred to us as we've built this first canoe. In time we hope this can become a knowledge base that will be of service to future builders of this kind of boat

- Tools that work
- Shopsmith disk sander (?" diameter)
- drum sander... need to improve it: currently just aluminum stock, abrasive-wrapped, chucked into the lathe
- table saw with featherboard
- awl/pick (piercing station molds for wiring stringers on)
- thin wire
- Tools needed
- infeed and outfeed rollers for tablesaw
- zero-clearance insert for tablesaw (cardboard over the existing insert worked in a pinch)
- bandsaw (edit: now we have one!)
- double-sided tape: hold saw guide to stem, for instance
- Processes that work
- pencil line on strongback
- didn't do taut wire, seems ok
- helps that strongback is very rigid and flat
- but: maybe would have helped avoid the swayback observed in Canoe1
- wiring stringers to station molds:
- enables single-handed stringer installation
- assists even when workers are plenty
- adhering temporary clamp-holding wedges to stringer ends
- CA glue is easy to knock loose later
- strong double-sided masking tape may serve as well
- friction tape on angle blocks could eliminate need for adhesion to stringers
- rubber band clamping stringers to stems
- enables stringer-stem adhesion without the temporary clamp-holding wedges
- install rubber bands onto stringers first, then tighten them and hold tight with a wire wrap
- lashing the ribs to stringers
- use artificial sinew: beeswax impregnated nylon, available at leather stores
- use a square lashing technique, frap clockwise then spiral clockwise up the rib to the next junction. (if that detail worries you :-)
- but: epoxy may actually be best:
-after lashing, additional sanding is very tricky, both on bare wood and after sealing the wood
-the wax from the sinew bleeds through the Dacron during the heat shrinking process
- Processes that need refinement
- assembling + adhering stem assembly
- need flat surface, nonstick (maybe bluetape)
- maybe nail in place?
- 2"x4" as station mold cleat
- adequate, but...
- could be more right-angled if tablesaw ripped to square section
- remember to note beam width amidships before cutting free of strongbacks and removing molds
- sand ALL stringers and ribs before assembly, sand smooth
- far easier to do at this point
- may reduce rib breakage during bending
- consider aggressive roundover: may reduce weight, reduce skin stress
- station molds: put the print side of the cardboard to the inside of the sandwich! Aesthetics...
- stringer cutting
- don't sweat it
- cut, then sand to shape... use motor sander?
- consider compound miter gauge?
- ribs:
- mark locations on strongback before building stringers on
- clothes steamer was adequate, may need slightly bigger tube.
- try to leave other tasks (sanding, etc.) for interstitial work during rib bending waits.
- use lashing, maybe not waxy, to hold ribs instead of zipties.
- wood finishing:
- epoxy: use only if wet look is ok, plan many coats + sanding (don't use lashing)
- other?
- Dacron attachment
- spend a little more time stretching and clamping at gunwales before fastening and shrinking.
- get better controlled irons! Arduino + PID, please
- Dacron shrinking
- ditto re. irons
- Heat 'n' Bond at ~250°F, also pre-shrink fabric there.
- Next shrink fabric at ~300°F
- Final shrink fabric at ~350°F
- Redesign/Improvement Ideas
- Build Strongback with station locations planned
- Build reusable station molds with retractable stringer hookers

*Will we need an event permit or other legal permission to host the event? Research needed.

Date and Time
*Date set as September 29
*Time proposed as 2-5pm

Menu
*Without a reliable attendee estimate, we are uncomfortable planning to serve food of any substance.
*We'll have coffee (supplied by Brad of Mojoe's)
*We will have water and other drinks on hand. Request members volunteer to bring coolers & ice.
*We should have some chips and snacks of some sort.

Events
We had tons of great brainstorming about events. We had thought of having about 6 twenty minutes talks. That would leave about 10 minutes for Q&A, presentation switch over, etc. That would be about 3 hours of presentation, <s>and roughly an hour break for food</s>. We really like the idea of letting people make/participate as much as possible. Best case ideas let people do things in the space. The next best thing would be to give people project instructions that they can take home. A fantastic idea was to connect our short presentations to a longer event already scheduled at one of our public meetings. We give them a tease, then encourage them to come back by showing them that the full presentation is on the calendar. This should do a great job of helping to bring people back to the space.

Ideas for potential 20 minute presentations/teasers
*A raspberry pi presentation. We would need someone with a raspi to take point on this one and develop this talk.
**Ideally, we could develop this into a longer presentation to put on the calendar to let us dig in deeper (and encourage attendees to return).
**Presenter: Jess
**Time: 2:00 PM

*A KMBI presentation. Adan has volunteered to lead/present this presentation.
**Include a recap of the boat building process.
**Perhaps have some sort of scale demo to show off part of the process.
**Hopefully have another boat in the queue and invite attendees back to one of the working sessions.
**Presenter: Adan
**Time: 2:30 PM

*Library Injection
**Let's have some hacking! Demonstrate how you can intercept library calls from proprietary software and redirect them. Also show multiple examples of tools which used library interposition as their underlying method of operation. (RelativePrime)
**Presenter: Pete
**Time: 3:00 PM

*Glasswork
**Project/presentation involves cutting glass bottles with a torch.
**Presenter: Nathaniel
**Time: 3:30 PM

*Flint-knapping
**Presenter: James's friend (James)
**Time: 4:00 PM

*Touchtable MK-II
**Presenter: Zach
**Time: 4:30 PM

*Below items were struck from the schedule, but may still be events in the future

**<s>A demo on robots. Perhaps we can reach out to the knox area robotics guys to do a presentation?</s>

**<s>Cracking password hashes with oclHashcat</s>
***Explain how hashing algorithms work and are implemented in authentication schemes, and how such can be cracked with CPU / GPU based systems.

**<s>An Arduino-based presentation that would show some of the projects our members have already completed with Arduinos as well as show some great Arduino projects we know about on the internet. We would need someone to volunteer to develop/lead this seminar.</s>
***I could get my PID controller demo put back together as a live demo.
***We should schedule another "Getting started with Arduino" class for later in the year to refer this session to.
***Maybe include other boards like the makey-makey.

**<s>A presentation on dyeing cloth. I would volunteer to lead this presentation.</s>
***Show the process for making the acoustic panels.
***Explain/demo the cloth dyeing process. It's possible that if I did this early enough that by the end the cloth would be rinsed well enough to hold up and show off.
***Schedule a "Saturday Session" for a dyeing class to invite attendees back to.

**<s>Have a session where we get people to assemble a cornhole board.</s>
***Perhaps also have a session or workstation set up to let people sew their own cornhole bags. Bonus points if we can set up a screen-printing item so that we can let people make cornhole bags and put the knox makers logo on them.

Ideas for potential all-day demos
*If the 3D printer is ready, have it be printing something as a demo.

*Have the vacuum forming equipment set up and prepared for kids to make a few masks.
**Have Oct. 2 be a plaster mold making class, where we make some more molds to take to ATL MMF. Invite folks back for that.
**Presenter: Everyone who is capable as needed
**Future Date: Oct 2nd

<s>*James is going to look into having some of his friends do some flint-napping demos outside.</s> (added as presentation -James)

*Synth kit build (James)

Awesome stretch project ideas
*<s>M.U.G.E.N. - James is going to look into the possibility of doing some green-screen work to get be able to put pictures of attendees into a 2-d fighting game. (edit 8/24/12, James: http://www.elecbyte.com/mugen It will take me awhile to figure this one out, after taking a closer look. I doubt I'd have anything by the Grand Opening. If anyone has experience with M.U.G.E.N. or similar, though..)</s> We'll come back to this one at a later time. Still a great idea. --Laz 23:13, 26 August 2012 (EDT)
*DIY Air-hockey table - Mike is going to look into the feasibility of a DIY air hockey table.
*Rubens Tube - Issac is going to bring a Rubens tube to see if we can get it working safely enough to set up as a possible demo. Use the function generators to show some awesome waves.

Legal and Other
*Will we need an event permit or other legal permission to host the event?

* KnoxMakers is a diverse group of enthusiastic learners and makers. Membership is open to the general public, and anyone interested in sharing a collaborative learning process is encouraged to apply. KnoxMakers is an East Tennessee MakerSpace and Hackerspace group formed from the popular global DIY movements established by Make, the same group responsible for the world's largest DIY convention MakerFaire. While many projects are focused on technology, a range of projects, workshops, and activities run the gamut from crafting with hand tools to the arts. KnoxMakers, located in Oak Ridge, allows registered members to share tools, projects, and learning experiences. (James's initial sample draft, 100 words)
500 word summary
<code> Hacking usually has a negative connotation, but it can be used constructively. In some circles, it's a synonym for making, creating, and innovating. A hackerspace, also known as a makerspace, hacklab, or creative space, is a location where people with varied interests such as science, technology, art, craftsmanship, and computers meet to collaborate and socialize. Members of these spaces may have an interest in one or more of these topics and bring their knowledge, experience and projects to the group. In exchange, they have the opportunity to learn from others and collaborate on projects of all sorts.

This movement has come to the Knoxville area with the formation of a local makerspace, Knox Makers (http://www.knoxmakers.org). The group has been active in the area for nearly two years. In that time, the group has had dozens of workshops on topics that are as low tech as blacksmithing and making chainmail, to topics as high tech as using microprocessors for automatic digital control, or how to turn a 16 year-old rear projection screen television into a multi-touch interactive surface. The workshops are open to the public, and are usually scheduled for the first Tuesday and third Thursday of each month.

Recently, Knox Makers has opened a 1,000 square foot makerspace at 1010 Commerce Park Drive in Oak Ridge. This space gives its members a place to share tools and other resources when working on projects. Currently, the space has some basic wood and metal working tools like saws, lathes, and a mill. There are projects in development to add 3D printers, a 40-watt laser cutter, and a server rack as available resources.

Knox Makers will be hosting a grand opening event for this space on September 29, from 2-5 PM. They will be having a number of short presentations about upcoming workshops. Topics include the new Raspberry Pi Linux-based computer, canoe building, cloth dyeing, an introduction to the Arduino microcontroller, and more. There will also be demonstrations of projects currently in development at shop. This event is open to the public, anyone interested in learning more about the group is encouraged to visit them on the web.</code>
Organizational Info
*We are a chartered with the state as a non-profit organization, specifically a mutual benefit corporation.
**This means we are non-profit, which means we don't have to pay certain franchise and use taxes. However, when people refer to tax-exempt organizations, they are thinking of charities that don't pay sales tax on purchases and other things. We are not that kind of non-profit.
After last night's class, I'm interested in sewing for the first time. So interested that I'm bidding on an old, all-metal Singer Industrial Sewing Machine like the one Keith has. Keith had the machine with him last night. They were made in the 1950s. It can sew leather! Today I also bought the service manual for an old Singer that we have in order to try to repair it. (A part was broken when it was being refurbished; it's worked erratically since.)

The idea of making one's own lightweight, hiking equipment was a great motivation. Adan sewed his own lightweight backpack which he had with him last night. It is 12 years old, but still looks great. (Finding out that we have an AT Through-Hiker in our midst was also interesting. My daughter was saying afterwards that she wants to hike the AT someday.)

The class had several of us sitting around the table with experts around teaching us how to thread the machine and uncovering the mysteries surrounding bobbins. I'd always thought the machines worked a different way than they do. Afterwards we learned about tearing out stitches (by first doing it the wrong way). Some tried their hands at repairing some items. Much knowledge and sewing wisdom was exchanged. My wife, who has sewed for 30+ years, learned some things last night.

Adan started a wiki page at https://knoxmakers.org/wiki/Sewing_for_Hackers.

We had a couple visitors, Ed and Debbie, come in who were guests of Andy. Ed is a co-worker. They plan to return for the Grand Opening later this month.
Sewing leather is an interesting prospect for sure. Combined with the
laser cutter, and drawing upon the leather working skills of those in
our midst, one could conceive of some pretty cool projects.

Last weekend Syd and I went to Muddy pond which is a Mennonite
community over near Cookville. There is a leather / tac store there,
and we scooped up a huge bag of leather (some pretty large scraps) for
$12. You can get tanned hides (mostly bull and buffalo) in various
thicknesses and sizes and in an array of colors for incredibly
reasonable prices (e.g. $8 - 12 for ~10 sq. feet, etc.) The are also
things such as leather belts for $10, harness leather, etc. The place
is a gem.

Also for sewing project ideas there are some cool youtube videos for
threadbangers - some Steampunk and other ideas, etc.
Times like this (and a thousand others/day) I'm glad I'm just vegetarian, not vegan. Leather as a material remains unequaled. I love the idea of laser cutting it, especially using the laser to cut (and sear!) holes to save awl time/pain and tearing. You could also perforate for flexibility, ventilate for breathing, etc.

Definitely, thanks so much for the report, Jeff. I was delighted people had a good time and learned a little too. That's awesome that you're sourcing a 'real' sewing machine! Keith's is a way more serious beast than mine.

Here's lookin' to the next sewing event... but don't wait until then if you're curious: Sam has very generously left his machine in the Space (marked with a big "WORKS" post-it), and it's indeed fully functional.

We'll throw up some not-quite-random notes that have occurred to us as we've built this first canoe. In time we hope this can become a knowledge base that will be of service to future builders of this kind of boat

- Tools that work
- Shopsmith disk sander (?" diameter)
- drum sander... need to improve it: currently just aluminum stock, abrasive-wrapped, chucked into the lathe
- table saw with featherboard
- awl/pick (piercing station molds for wiring stringers on)
- thin wire
- Tools needed
- infeed and outfeed rollers for tablesaw
- zero-clearance insert for tablesaw

*Date set as September 29
*Time proposed as 2-5pm

Menu
*Without a reliable attendee estimate, we are uncomfortable planning to serve food of any substance.
*We'll have coffee (supplied by Brad of Mojoe's)
*We will have water and other drinks on hand. Request members volunteer to bring coolers & ice.
*We should have some chips and snacks of some sort.

Events
We had tons of great brainstorming about events. We had thought of having about 6 twenty minutes talks. That would leave about 10 minutes for Q&A, presentation switch over, etc. That would be about 3 hours of presentation, and roughly an hour break for food.

*An Arduino-based presentation that would show some of the projects our members have already completed with Arduinos as well as show some great Arduino projects we know about on the internet. We would need someone to volunteer to develop/lead this seminar.
**I could get my PID controller demo put back together as a live demo.
**We should schedule another "Getting started with Arduino" class for later in the year to refer this session to.
**Maybe include other boards like the makey-makey.
*A raspberry pi presentation. We would need someone with a raspi to take point on this one and develop this talk.
**Ideally, we could develop this into a longer presentation to put on the calendar to let us dig in deeper (and encourage attendees to return).
*A KMBI presentation. Adan has volunteered to lead/present this presentation.
**Include a recap of the boat building process.
**Perhaps have some sort of scale demo to show off part of the process.
**Hopefully have another boat in the queue and invite attendees back to one of the working sessions.
*A presentation on dyeing cloth. I would volunteer to lead this presentation.
**Show the process for making the acoustic panels.
**Explain/demo the cloth dyeing process. It's possible that if I did this early enough that by the end the cloth would be rinsed well enough to hold up and show off.
**Schedule a "Saturday Session" for a dyeing class to invite attendees back to.
*Have a session where we get people to assemble a cornhole board.
**Perhaps also have a session or workstation set up to let people sew their own cornhole bags. Bonus points if we can set up a screen-printing item so that we can let people make cornhole bags and put the knox makers logo on them.
*A demo on robots. Perhaps we can reach out to the knox area robotics guys to do a presentation?
*Library Injection
**Let's have some hacking! Demonstrate how you can intercept library calls from proprietary software and redirect them. Also show multiple examples of tools which used library interposition as their underlying method of operation. (RelativePrime)
*Cracking password hashes with oclHashcat
**Explain how hashing algorithms work and are implemented in authentication schemes, and how such can be cracked with CPU / GPU based systems.

Publicity
Events
We had tons of great brainstorming about events. We had thought of having about 6 twenty minutes talks. That would leave about 10 minutes for Q&A, presentation switch over, etc. That would be about 3 hours of presentation, and roughly an hour break for food.

*Time proposed as 2-5pm
**Without a reliable attendee estimate, we are uncomfortable planning to serve food.
**We will have water and other drinks on hand. Request members volunteer to bring coolers & ice.

Menu
*Grilling burgers and dogs for quick/easy production
*Need some vegetarian/celiac friendly options

Events
We had tons of great brainstorming about events. We had thought of having about 6 twenty minutes talks. That would leave about 10 minutes for Q&A, presentation switch over, etc. That would be about 3 hours of presentation, and roughly an hour break for food.

Publicity
This is an interactive Sierpinski idea, maybe fun for the kids: The Chaos Race.

Projected on the wall is a playing zone... that's where you'll build your triangle. But you'll be graded on accuracy and speed.
-the hardware: a computer, a projector, and a webcam.
-your weapon: a laser pointer, maybe with a wrist mount and cool trigger mechanism to make you feel like a superhero.
-the beginning: you "shoot" any three points in the zone, creating the vertices of the triangle. The computer will, via webcam input, register those shots and project marks to record the locations.
-the build:
-the build clock starts when you shoot a random point anywhere inside the triangle. The computer marks that spot.
-the computer will then, at random, highlight a vertex.
-you must, as quickly as possible, shoot at the point halfway between your starting point and the highlighted vertex. The computer marks that spot.
-the computer will again, at random, highlight another vertex.
-you must, as quickly as possible, shoot at the point halfway between your most recent point and the highlighted vertex. The computer marks that spot.
-repeat....
-...until you run out of time!
-Scoring:
-a numerical value, based on the accuracy of your shots and the number of points you were able to mark in the time allotted.
-the points may also be colored by accuracy, so it's drab if it's inaccurate (and also looks less like the actual fractal) or very colorful if you're right on the mark.

We'll throw up some not-quite-random notes that have occurred to us as we've built this first canoe. In time we hope this can become a knowledge base that will be of service to future builders of this kind of boat

- Tools that work
- Shopsmith disk sander (?" diameter)
- drum sander... need to improve it: currently just aluminum stock, abrasive-wrapped, chucked into the lathe
- table saw with featherboard
- awl/pick (piercing station molds for wiring stringers on)
- thin wire
- Tools needed
- infeed and outfeed rollers for tablesaw
- zero-clearance insert for tablesaw
- bandsaw
- Processes that work
- pencil line on strongback
- didn't do taut wire, seems ok so far
- helps that strongback is very rigid and flat
- wiring stringers to station molds:
- enables single-handed stringer installation
- assists even when workers are plenty
- adhering temporary clamp-holding wedges to stringer ends
- CA glue is easy to knock loose later
- strong double-sided masking tape may serve as well
- friction tape on angle blocks could eliminate need for adhesion to stringers
- lashing the ribs to stringers
- use artificial sinew: beeswax impregnated nylon, available at leather stores
- use a square lashing technique, frap clockwise then spiral clockwise up the rib to the next junction. (if that detail worries you :-)
- Processes that need refinement
- assembling + adhering stem assembly
- need flat surface, nonstick (maybe bluetape)
- maybe nail in place?
- 2"x4" as station mold cleat
- adequate, but...
- could be more right-angled if ripped to square section
- simple lever/bender to clamp stringers to stem
- Redesign/Improvement Ideas
- Build Strongback with station locations planned
- Build reusable station molds with retractable stringer hookers
